May 7th marked the two-year anniversary of the Courage Wall launch. For those of you who aren't familiar with this project, it's a huge community chalkboard that reads, "I WISH I HAD THE COURAGE TO . . . ®
Over the past two years, thousands of people have shared their fears and dreams on the wall and with me. The first entry that you see on the top left corner may be the most frequently shared, "Let Go." Dozens of people scribed these words, hoping to find a way to lighten their load as they walk through life. But what does it mean, and how do you really do it?
"Let go," means different things to different people. For some, it's letting go of the need to be in control. To some it's letting go of the need to be right. For others, it's letting go of the need to be liked.
If we are afraid to lose control, we might wish to have the courage to say yes to try things out of our comfort zones. If we are afraid to be wrong, we might wish to have the courage to consider others' opinions. If we are afraid to be liked, we might wish to have the courage to say no, even when we believe people won't like us if we do.
Without even realizing it, most of us carry around things that weigh us down. They take away from our lightness and stifle us from becoming all of who we're meant to be. What heaviness are you carrying around? What assumptions have you made about yourself or about life that you're ready to discard? What ideas (like shame, guilt, fear) have clipped your wings and kept you from soaring?
"Soar" Interactive Public Art Project
We have exciting news! We're launching a new interactive public art project called "Soar." This project is all about figuring out what we're ready to let go of so that we can be more free. Soar launches in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, VA on June 1st in collaboration with DRBA's First Thursdays and it will run through June 23rd with a special closing after Well Ray. It's another consciousness-raising community-building project that's sure to make you think and feel all sorts of good stuff.
We're not quite ready to share all of the juicy details, but stay tuned for more information in future newsletters and on our We Live Big Facebook page.
